Boiler problems we fix
No heating or hot water
The most common call we get, especially on the first cold day of the year.
Losing pressure
Pressure that keeps dropping below 1 bar usually means a leak or a worn part.
Fault codes and lockouts
The boiler shows a code or keeps shutting itself down.
Leaks and drips
Water under the boiler or around pipes, valves and the pressure relief pipe outside.
Strange noises
Banging, gurgling or a kettle-like rumble when the heating is on.
Cold radiators
Some radiators stay cold, or are cold at the bottom, even with the heating on full.
Quick checks before you call
Some problems are easy to sort yourself. Try these first:
- Is the gas on? If your hob lights, the gas supply is fine.
- Is the boiler getting power? Check the switch next to it and your fuse box.
- Thermostat and timer. Turn the thermostat up a few degrees and check the timer is on.
- Pressure. With the heating off, the gauge should usually read between 1 and 1.5 bar. Your boiler manual shows how to top it up.
- Frozen pipe. In a cold snap, the small plastic pipe outside can freeze. Pour warm (not boiling) water over it, then reset the boiler.
- Reset once. If there's a reset button, try it once. If it keeps cutting out, call us.
When it's an emergency
Smell gas? Call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999straight away. Open windows, don't use light switches, and turn the gas off at the meter if you can.
Headaches, dizziness or a yellow flame? These can be signs of carbon monoxide. Turn the boiler off, get some fresh air and read our carbon monoxide advice.
No heat with a baby, an elderly person or someone unwell at home? Tell us when you call so we can prioritise the job.
Repair or replace?
Most breakdowns are a single worn part, like a pump, fan, valve or sensor, and a repair gets you back up and running. If your boiler is old, keeps breaking down or needs a major part, we'll tell you honestly whether anew boiler makes more sense. It's your choice either way.
Once it's fixed, an annual boiler service is the best way to stop it happening again. Many breakdowns start as small problems that a service would have caught.
Common questions
My boiler is showing a fault code. What does it mean?
Each make uses its own codes, so the same code can mean different things on a Worcester Bosch and a Vaillant. Write down the code and the boiler model, which is usually on a sticker on the front or underneath. Tell us both when you call. It helps us work out the likely fault and bring the right parts.
My heating works but there is no hot water. Why?
On a combi boiler this is often a stuck diverter valve, the part that switches between heating and hot water. It can also be a faulty sensor or low pressure. On a system with a hot water cylinder, check the hot water timer is on before calling.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
Usually a leak somewhere in the system, a failing pressure relief valve, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Topping up the pressure treats the symptom. The engineer finds and fixes the cause.
Is it worth repairing an old boiler?
If the boiler is under about 10 years old, a repair nearly always makes sense. If it is over 12 to 15 years old and needs an expensive part, like a heat exchanger, a new boiler can work out cheaper over the next few years. We will give you both options and let you decide.
Do you repair all makes?
We work on all the common makes, including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi, Glow-worm and Viessmann. For older or rare models, whether parts are still made decides whether a repair is worthwhile.
