Power flushing in Birmingham
A power flush is a deep clean of your central heating. A machine pushes water and a cleaner through your radiators and pipes to wash out sludge. In Birmingham, ours costs from £350 for up to 6 radiators. It takes about 4 to 5 hours, and the inhibitor top-up is included.
Power flushing work we do
These are the power flushing jobs we do in Birmingham. Our Gas Safe registered engineers have over 20 years of experience, and we work on all makes of boiler.
- Power flush: A deep clean of your radiators and pipes that washes the sludge out. From £350 for up to 6 radiators, with the inhibitor topped up at the end.
- Magnetic filter fitting: A filter fitted on the pipe by your boiler, to catch bits of sludge with a magnet. £140, parts and labour included.
How much does a power flush cost in Birmingham?
Our power flush costs from £350 for up to 6 radiators. If you have more than 6 radiators, ask us for a price first.
The price includes:
- Flushing every radiator and the pipes between them, one radiator at a time
- Cleaning your magnetic filter, if you already have one
- Refilling the system with clean water
- Topping up the inhibitor at the end
An inhibitor is a liquid that goes in your heating water. It protects the inside of the system from rust and sludge. A magnetic filter is a small device on the pipe by your boiler. It catches bits of sludge with a magnet. If you don't have one, we can fit one for £140, including parts and labour.
What is a power flush?
A power flush washes the sludge out of your central heating. Sludge is a thick black mud. It forms when the inside of your radiators and pipes slowly rusts. It's heavy, so it sinks to the bottom of the radiators and blocks the hot water.
A flushing machine pumps water and a cleaner round the system at speed. The cleaner loosens the sludge, and the fast water carries it out. Then the system is refilled with clean water.
How does a power flush work?
- We connect a flushing machine to your heating pipes.
- We add a cleaner to the water to loosen the sludge.
- We flush each radiator in turn, until the dirty water clears.
- We clean your magnetic filter, if you have one.
- We refill the system with clean water.
- We top up the inhibitor to help protect the system.
The whole job takes about 4 to 5 hours.
Do you need a power flush? Signs to look for
The main sign is radiators that are warm at the top but cold at the bottom. That usually means sludge has settled inside them. Other signs include:
- black or dirty water when you bleed a radiator
- radiators that take a long time to warm up
- a boiler that rumbles or bangs. A rumble like a kettle is called kettling. See our guide to boiler noises.
- brown or black water dripping from a leak on the heating
- a boiler you top up often (fresh water thins the inhibitor, so sludge builds faster)
Our guide to cold radiators helps you work out what's going on. For dirty water from a leak, see boiler leaking water. For regular top-ups, see boiler losing pressure.
When a power flush won't help
A flush only fixes problems caused by sludge. We'll tell you honestly if your heating needs something else.
- A radiator cold at the top has air in it. Bleeding it is usually enough.
- One cold radiator often has a stuck or closed valve.
- If every radiator is cold, the boiler or the heating pump may have failed.
- A boiler that keeps losing pressure usually has a leak or a worn valve.
For a broken boiler, see boiler repair. For stuck valves and pumps, see our plumber page. Our boiler problems guides cover more faults.
Power flushing before a new boiler
A new boiler on a dirty system can clog up with old sludge. So boiler makers usually expect the system to be clean when a new boiler goes in.
If you're thinking about a new boiler, ask us about the state of your system at the free survey. See our boiler installation page for how that works.
Keeping sludge away afterwards
A clean system stays clean for longer with a little care. Keep the inhibitor at the right strength, and fit a magnetic filter if you don't have one. Try not to top up the pressure too often, as fresh water thins the inhibitor.
A yearly boiler service helps too. The engineer checks your boiler and the system pressure, so small problems get spotted early.
Common questions
How much does a power flush cost in Birmingham?
Our power flush starts from £350. That covers up to 6 radiators. It includes cleaning your magnetic filter, if you have one, and topping up the inhibitor at the end. If you have more than 6 radiators, ask us for a price first. If you have no magnetic filter, we can fit one for £140.
How long does a power flush take?
About 4 to 5 hours for most homes. We flush each radiator in turn, so the time depends on how many you have and how much sludge is inside.
Is a power flush worth it?
It is worth it when sludge is the problem. Signs include radiators cold at the bottom, black water when you bleed them, and a slow or noisy heating system. If your system is clean and heats well, you don't need one. We will tell you honestly if a flush won't help.
Do I need a power flush with a new boiler?
Often, yes, if the old system has sludge in it. Sludge from old pipes and radiators can clog a new boiler. Boiler makers usually expect the system to be clean when a new boiler goes in, so it can matter for the warranty. Ask us about it when you book your free boiler survey. See our boiler installation page.
Will a power flush fix one cold radiator?
Not always. If only one radiator is cold, the cause is often a stuck or closed valve, not sludge. If it is cold at the top, it usually has air in it and needs bleeding. A flush helps when several radiators are cold at the bottom. Read our guide to cold radiators.
Can a power flush damage old pipes or radiators?
A flush doesn't harm pipes and radiators in good condition. But in a very old system, rust and sludge may be plugging a weak spot. Once they are washed out, a joint or radiator that was already close to failing can start to leak. The flush shows up the weak spot. If a leak shows up, we can repair it.
Do I need a magnetic filter?
A magnetic filter is a good idea after a flush. It sits on the pipe by your boiler and catches bits of sludge with a magnet, before they settle in the radiators or the boiler. If you already have one, we clean it as part of the flush. If not, we can fit one for £140, including parts and labour.
How often does a heating system need a power flush?
There is no set time. Most systems only need one when the signs of sludge show up. Keeping the inhibitor strong and having a magnetic filter both help to slow sludge down, so you need a flush less often.
