Commercial electricians in Birmingham
NICEIC approved electricians for shops, offices, takeaways and other business premises in Birmingham. Fixed wire testing costs £150, plus £25 per circuit. We're open 24/7, and we can work outside your opening hours.
We do electrical work for all kinds of businesses in Birmingham. That includes shops, offices, takeaways, restaurants, salons, churches and workshops. We test the wiring, find faults, fit lights and sockets, and fix what's wrong. We've been electricians for over 20 years, and we hold £5 million public liability insurance.
Commercial electrical work we do
These are the jobs we do for businesses across Birmingham.
- Commercial EICR (fixed wire testing): We test the wiring built into your premises and give you a written report. £150 plus £25 per circuit.
- Repairs after a failed report: We quote for the work the report asks for. Then we do it.
- Electrical fault finding: Trips, dead sockets and flickering lights. We find the cause and fix it.
- Lighting: New lights fitted, and broken ones repaired, inside and outside.
- Emergency lighting: Lights that come on by themselves in a power cut, so people can find the way out.
- Sockets and power points: Extra sockets where you need them, and old or damaged ones replaced.
- Fuse board replacement: Old boards swapped for new ones with modern safety switches.
- Three-phase supplies: A bigger supply used for heavy equipment. We work on three-phase boards and circuits.
- Rewiring business premises: Full or part rewires when the wiring is old or the layout changes.
- EV chargers: Chargers for electric cars fitted at your premises, for you, your staff or your customers.
- Smoke and CO alarms: Alarms fitted in business premises. CO (carbon monoxide) is a poison gas you can't see or smell.
Fixed wire testing (commercial EICRs) in Birmingham
Fixed wire testing is a safety check of the wiring built into your building. It covers the fuse boards, cables, sockets, switches and lights. It doesn't cover things you plug in. Those need PAT testing, which we also do.
Another name for it is a commercial EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report). At the end you get a written report. It's a report, not a certificate. It says whether the wiring is safe to keep using.
Each problem we find gets a code, so you can see how urgent it is:
- C1: danger now. It needs making safe straight away.
- C2: could become dangerous. It needs fixing soon.
- FI: further investigation. Something needs a closer look.
- C3: improvement advised. It doesn't fail the report on its own.
Our price
£150 plus £25 per circuit
A circuit is one run of wiring from the fuse board, such as the sockets in one area. Each switch on your fuse board is usually one circuit. So you can count them for a rough idea of the cost.
- 8 circuits: £350 in total
- 16 circuits: £550 in total
- 24 circuits: £750 in total
Repairs, if the report finds any, are quoted separately before we start.
How often does a business need one?
The law doesn't give a fixed date. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 say the wiring at work must be kept safe. Testing is the usual way to show you've done that.
Common guidance is up to every 5 years for shops and offices. Busier or higher-risk places often need shorter gaps. Your last report gives the date for the next one. Insurers often ask to see it, too.
Who needs it
- Business owners who run their own premises
- Tenants whose lease makes them responsible for the electrics
- Landlords who let out shops, offices or other commercial units
Do you let a flat above your shop? That flat counts as a rented home, so it needs a landlord EICR. See our EICR page for homes and rentals.
What happens on the day
Look over
We check the fuse boards, sockets, switches and lights for damage and wear.
Test
We test each circuit. Most tests need that circuit switched off for a while.
Report
You get a written report, with each problem explained in plain English.
Fix
If anything fails, we quote for the repairs. Once they're done, we confirm it in writing.
Working around your opening hours
Switching circuits off can get in the way of a busy shop or office. So we can come early, in the evening or at the weekend. That way you don't have to close, and your staff can keep working.
Other electrical work for businesses
Testing is only part of it. We also fix faults, add sockets, fit new lights and replace old fuse boards. We can rewire a unit, fit an EV charger or put in smoke and CO alarms.
We're open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your power goes off, call our emergency electrician line any time.
What we don't do
We don't take on industrial work, such as factories. For electrical work in your home, see our electrician page.
We're NICEIC approved. NICEIC checks the work of the electricians on its list. You can look us up on its register. See our NICEIC entry.
Common questions
What is fixed wire testing?
It's a safety check of the wiring built into a building. That means the fuse boards, cables, sockets, switches and lights. Fixed wire testing and a commercial EICR are the same thing. EICR stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report. At the end you get a written report on the state of the wiring.
How much does a commercial EICR cost?
£150, plus £25 for each circuit we test. So 8 circuits cost £350 in total, and 16 circuits cost £550. Any repairs are quoted separately, before we start.
How often should fixed wire testing be done in a shop or office?
There's no set gap in the law. Common guidance is up to every 5 years for shops and offices. Busier or higher-risk places may need it more often. Your last report says when the next test is due, and your insurer may set a date too.
Is an EICR a legal requirement for commercial property?
The law doesn't name the EICR. But the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 say the wiring at work must be kept safe. Regular testing is the usual way to show you've done that. Many insurers and landlords ask for a recent report too.
What's the difference between fixed wire testing and PAT testing?
Fixed wire testing checks the wiring built into the building. PAT testing checks the things you plug in, like kettles, computers and heaters. Most businesses need both. We do PAT testing too, and it has its own page. See PAT testing prices.
What happens if my commercial EICR is unsatisfactory?
The report lists each problem with a code. C1 means danger now. C2 means it could become dangerous. FI means it needs a closer look. Any of these means the report is unsatisfactory. C3 means an improvement is advised, and it doesn't fail the report on its own. We quote for the repairs, do them, and confirm in writing when they're done.
