PAT testing in Birmingham

Portable appliance testing for offices, shops, landlords and businesses. £60 per visit, plus £3.50 per item, with every item labelled and recorded.

What PAT testing is

PAT stands for portable appliance testing. It's a safety check on electrical items that plug into a socket. Think kettles, computers, heaters, extension leads and power tools.

Faulty plugs and worn leads cause fires and electric shocks. A PAT test finds these problems before they hurt someone. It's quick, and most items take a couple of minutes each.

Our price

We keep it simple: £60 per visit, plus £3.50 per item. Here's what that comes to:

  • 20 items: £130 in total
  • 50 items: £235 in total
  • 100 items: £410 in total

What we check

  • A visual check. We look for damaged plugs, cracked cases, loose or cut cables and signs of burning.
  • The fuse. We make sure the plug has the right fuse for the item.
  • The earth. On metal-cased items, we test that the earth wire works. The earth is the safety path that stops the case giving you a shock.
  • The insulation. We test that electricity can't leak out where it shouldn't.

Each item gets a pass or fail label with the date. You get a full record of every item we tested, and the result for each one.

Who we test for

  • Offices and shops
  • Cafés, takeaways and restaurants
  • Landlords, HMOs and letting agents
  • Schools, nurseries, churches and community halls
  • Workshops and trades with power tools

We're open 24 hours, 7 days a week. So we can test before you open or after you close, and your staff aren't left without their computers in the middle of the day.

Fixed wiring too

PAT testing covers the items you plug in. It doesn't check the wiring inside the walls, the sockets or the fuse board. That needs an EICR (electrical safety report), sometimes called fixed wire testing.

We're NICEIC approved, so we can do both on the same visit. Landlords can also add agas safety certificate, because we're Gas Safe registered too.

Common questions

How much does PAT testing cost?

£60 per visit, plus £3.50 for each item we test. So 20 items cost £130 in total, and 50 items cost £235.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

The law says electrical equipment at work must be kept safe. That comes from the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. The law does not say "PAT test" by name, but testing is the usual way to show you have done this. Many insurers, landlords and HMO licences ask for it too.

How often should appliances be tested?

It depends on the item and where it is used. Power tools on a building site need checking far more often than a printer in a quiet office. We can suggest a sensible gap between tests for your items when we visit.

What happens if something fails?

We label it as failed and tell you why. Often it is a simple fix, like a new plug or fuse, or a damaged lead. If it is not safe to repair, we will tell you it needs replacing. Failed items should not be used until they are fixed.

Do landlords need PAT testing?

In England, private landlords must have the fixed wiring checked with an EICR every 5 years. PAT testing is not required by law for most rentals, but it is good practice for any appliances you supply, such as a fridge, kettle or washing machine. Some HMO licences and letting agents ask for it.
